I’m thrilled to introduce you to my friend Susie Saltzman, a custom engagement ring designer whose mission is to make beautiful keepsakes that celebrate unique and personal milestones!
Today, we’re chatting about how Susie runs a business and balances single motherhood while still prioritizing her mental and physical health. She is such an inspiration to mompreneurs and I can’t wait for you to hear our conversation! Let’s dive in!
About Susie
What began as a favor many years ago, has since turned into a specialized Fine Jewelry business for Susie Saltzman. When her now-Brother-in-Law asked her to help him make her sister’s engagement ring, Susie decided she would counsel him through every step of the process. She learned about what he wanted in a ring, walked him through the four C’s and connected him with the best jeweler she knew in New York City. She hand selected the perfect diamond for her sister and had her ring hand made with special attention to detail.
She loved the experience so much that when her Brother-in-Law’s friends asked her where they could get the same quality and personal guidance, he sent them to Susie. She now draws upon over a decade of experience in the jewelry industry to help educate couples as they create the engagement ring of their dreams together.
Susie Saltzman worked in Product Development at Tiffany & Co. for many years and holds her Graduate Diamonds Certificate from the esteemed Gemological Institute of America, along with a number of other jewelry design and gemstone grading credentials.
Now, Susie Saltzman Fine Jewelry offers an alternative to the traditional fine jewelry purchase. Her modern approach to timeless design embodies the brand mission – Make beautiful keepsakes that celebrate unique and personal milestones. Each design is effortless, easy to wear and offers something unexpected while still feeling as though it could have spanned generations past and those to come!
The Reality of Running a Business
As we delved deeper into the business side of things, Susie shared the challenges of building her jewelry brand. For years, she worked tirelessly, often handling every aspect of the business herself. This hands-on experience allowed her to master various segments of her business, making it easier to delegate tasks as she built a team.
Today, Susie has a supportive team that helps her manage client inquiries, marketing, and other essential functions. This collaboration has freed her up to focus on higher-level business strategies and creative design, which is crucial for her growth as an entrepreneur.
Balancing Motherhood and Business
One of the most poignant parts of our conversation was about the balance—or lack thereof—between motherhood and running a business. Susie candidly admitted that achieving balance is a constant struggle, especially as a single mom.
She then shared a powerful analogy about four burners on a stovetop, representing family, friends, business, and hobbies. If you turn all four burners on high, something is bound to burn out.
For Susie, her daughter is her top priority, and she has learned to adjust her focus based on what is most important at any given time. This flexibility is essential, especially when unexpected challenges arise, such as a sick child or a last-minute client meeting.
The Importance of Mental Health
Throughout our discussion, it became clear that mental health plays a significant role in Susie’s life.
She spoke about the anxiety and guilt that often accompany motherhood, especially for ambitious women. Susie emphasized the importance of being honest with oneself and seeking support from other moms.
She shared a valuable lesson she learned from a friend: taking time for oneself is not only beneficial for the individual but also sets a positive example for children. By pursuing her passions and taking breaks when needed, Susie is teaching her daughter the importance of self-care and following one’s dreams.
Susie’s Advice for Aspiring Mompreneurs
For those listening who are aspiring entrepreneurs or mothers, Susie offered some sage advice. She encouraged them to think about what they want their lives to look like before starting a family. Planning for maternity leave, considering the type of support needed, and being open to revisiting those plans as life evolves are all crucial steps.
Susie also highlighted the importance of working for someone else before starting a business. The skills and experiences gained in a corporate environment can be invaluable when launching your own venture.
