013: Sales Mini-Series 1: Cultivate the Right Sales Mindset for Your Business

As many of you know, Erika is a leader with Monat, a luxury skin and hair care network marketing company. Often, Erika is asked to give keynote speeches to other representatives of the company on how to grow their business, and today’s podcast was inspired by one of those.   We are entering into a 3-part mini-series this week all about how to make sales for your business using social media, which means we have a BONUS episode launching on Friday!   In this conversation, Erika answers the following questions about cultivating the right sales mindset for your business. Here’s a sneak peek at her advice (but be sure to click PLAY on this episode, because she gives so much more valuable advice than what we’ve written here!).

Why is your mindset important for making sales?

For us, mindset is EVERYTHING. You have to believe in what it is that you’re selling and the value that you’re bringing to the table. Energy is tangible and people can feel when someone is authentic and genuinely passionate about what they’re talking about1   One tool that Erika mentioned to help cultivate the right mindset is the book The Big Leap by Gay Hendrix. This book changed our lives because it talks about what’s on the other side of fear. Fear, according to Hendrix, is just excitement without breath. This means that when it comes to making sales, you have to be willing to take risks and embrace the fear that comes with it.   In addition to having faith in your product or service, it’s also important to have mental toughness. You have to be able to handle the positive and negative feedback that comes your way. It’s not going to make you feel less valuable, but it will give you the opportunity to make changes and shifts.

What are the types of beliefs about money and sales a good marketer should have?

A lot of us have preconceived opinions or beliefs about sales, but we have to remember that sales is life. Whether you’re marketing a product or service or simply trying to get your child to eat their breakfast in the morning, you’re in sales!    Believing in what you sell is essential to success in sales and marketing. It is not enough to just have a product or service that you want to offer; you need to be passionate and enthusiastic about it. This enthusiasm will help you to connect with potential customers and will be the key to convincing them of the value of your product or service.   When Erika was younger, she had a cookie company called Honest Goodness. She  would go to flea markets and farmers markets in our hometown and try to sell her product. It was intimidating at first, but Erika quickly realized that she was selling something that she truly believed in. She was passionate about my product and I was confident that it was worth buying. I was able to use this enthusiasm to convince people of the value of my product, and it paid off.   If you are feeling intimidated by sales, remember that it is just a part of life. Sales are not only about making money; they can also be about transformation. If you are selling a product that you believe in, you can help to change people’s lives. If your product makes someone feel better or gives them more energy, then it’s worth the buy.

Does visualization play an important role in sales strategy?

Visualization is a key component of success in sales because ithelps you to envision the future and to create a plan for achieving it. By visualizing the outcome you want, you can create a roadmap to success. It gives you a clear goal to work towards, can help motivate you to take action, and will help you stay organized and focused on your goals.   If you struggle with this, Erika recommends writing down (yes, with a pen and paper!): if your life could be exactly what you wanted it to be, what would it look like? If there’s no obstacles and if you could literally wave a magic wand, what would your business, income, and lifestyle look like?   Then, to continue the exercise, write down how you feel about it. What would it feel like  to wake up in the morning knowing that this is your life? Get so nitty gritty detailed to get your juices flowing!   Once you’re able to clearly visualize your future, you can then develop a plan to unlock your full potential and achieve your goals.

How can someone identify what they’re naturally ‘good’ at when it comes to marketing?

Our advice, if you’re not sure what you’re ‘good’ at, is to get a mentor who can reflect your strengths to you and help you cultivate them and use them for your business. By learning from mentors, you can take the tools and strategies they have developed and apply them to your own life.   If you’re not able to invest in a mentor just yet, taking a test like the Gallup Strengths Finder can help you identify your top five strengths. If you find that one of your weaknesses is something like consistency or discipline, don’t be disheartened. You can learn and develop these skills!
