020: Our Real & Raw Home Birth Story

It’s time to go down memory lane! In this episode, we’re telling the real and raw story of our son’s birth, along with how Erika prepared for a natural home birth using the Pain Free Birth course by Karen Welton.   If you are pregnant, thinking of having children, want to have a redemptive birth experience, or are curious if home birth is for you, we hope our positive experience gives you insight into what it’s like!

Why We Chose Home Birth

A natural, physiological birth was not always in the plan for us, but after Erika found out she was pregnant, she felt a strong desire to have a home birth. We had already been on a health journey, so the idea of a home birth aligned with our values and beliefs.   Erika knew that she would feel safest giving birth at home, in a quiet place with a few people she trusted. She explained that feeling safe and comfortable is crucial for a more physiological and natural birth, and the course we took with Karen Welton from Pain Free Birth really helped solidify that decision!   Of course, our decision to have a home birth was a personal one. Every woman’s birth experience is unique! We encourage you to do your own research to make the best decision for yourself and your family, based on what feels right for you.

Prepare for Birth with Intention

It is so important to prepare mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically for the birthing process. From choosing your birth team carefully to doing research about the body’s ability to birth naturally, preparation is key to having a successful birth experience!   Kyle also shared his perspective as a partner during the birthing process. He emphasized the importance of being present and advocating for one’s partner during childbirth. He acknowledged that it can be challenging to navigate the intense emotions and physical sensations of childbirth, but stressed the need to be attentive and responsive to one’s partner’s needs.   One of the best things we did in preparation for Dawson’s birth was taking Karen Welton’s Pain Free Birth Course. Trust Your Intuition in Birth

One of the key themes that emerged from our home birth experience was the importance of trusting your intuition in birth. Erika emphasized the power of her intuition throughout her pregnancy and birth, and how it ultimately guided her decisions and choices. She noted that her intuition was often more powerful than any doctor’s advice or provider’s advice, and that it had never been wrong.   This is particularly important for women who may feel pressured to follow medical advice or recommendations that do not align with their own instincts or values.   Another key aspect of trusting your intuition in birth is being aware of your body and its needs. Erica encouraged women to listen to their bodies and advocate for their own needs during labor and delivery. This may involve making decisions that go against medical advice or recommendations, but ultimately it is about trusting your own instincts and doing what feels right for you and your baby.   In our experience, Kyle advocating for Erika and trusting HIS intuition was also very valuable to the experience. There were times when he would intuitively know that Erika needed him to support her in certain moments, and it was empowering for him to have the freedom to do that in our own home.

Birth Is Beautiful!

We believe our birth story is a testament to the beauty and power of birth. As Erika gave birth at home with the support of Kyle and her midwives, it became clear that birth is not just a physical process, but a deeply emotional and transformative one as well. Women go into labor as a maiden and come out a warrior!   We believe it’s crucial for women to feel empowered and in control of their own bodies and experiences. Ultimately, birth is not something to be feared or avoided, but something to be celebrated and embraced.   Whether you choose to give birth at home or in a hospital, with or without medication, the most important thing is that you feel empowered and supported throughout the process. And with the right team of midwives, doctors, and loved ones by her side, any woman can have a beautiful and empowering birth experience that leaves her feeling strong, capable, and confident!
