Understanding Postpartum

First and foremost, let’s acknowledge that postpartum is a unique journey for every mother. It’s a time filled with physical recovery, emotional ups and downs, and the joy of getting to know your new baby. However, it can also be overwhelming.

Between sleepless nights, hormonal changes, and the demands of caring for a newborn, it’s no wonder many moms feel like they’re drowning. I mean, you have a dinner plat size wound inside you, AND you’re taking care of an infant!

This is why I want to emphasize the importance of being gentle and kind to yourself during this time. Postpartum can last for months, even years, and it’s crucial to have a plan in place to support your recovery.

Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup, so let’s talk about how to fill yours!

Tip #1: Prioritize Rest

One of the most important things you can do postpartum is to prioritize rest. I read a fantastic book called The First Forty Days: The Essential Art of Nourishing the New Mother, which emphasizes the significance of taking time to heal after giving birth.

The first 40 days are essential for recovery, and I encourage you to take this time to lie in bed, snuggle your baby, and simply be still.

My midwives suggested a three-week rule: spend the first week in bed, the second week in your room, and the third week at home. This approach allows you to bond with your baby while giving your body the time it needs to heal.

Tip #2: Nourish Your Body

Nourishing your body with nutrient-dense foods is vital for postpartum recovery. After giving birth, your body needs to replenish minerals and heal from the physical trauma of childbirth. I focused on consuming warming foods like bone broth, soups, and stews, which are easy to digest and packed with nutrients.

I also made sure to have meals prepped and stocked in the freezer. Think about meals that are rich in protein and easy to prepare, like chicken congee or creamy mushroom soup. I have a ton of nourishing recipes in The Winter Table Cookbook!

I even created a postpartum cart next to my bed filled with snacks and nourishing drinks to keep my energy up while I was breastfeeding. If you’re filling your own postpartum cart, check out this list of some of my faves!

Tip #3: Be Kind to Yourself

It’s essential to be kind to yourself during this time. Your body has just gone through a significant change, and it’s normal to experience a rollercoaster of emotions. I remember feeling overwhelmed and questioning everything after my first baby. It’s okay to feel that way!

Having open conversations with your partner about how you’re feeling can be incredibly helpful. My husband was my safe person, and verbalizing my feelings helped me process the whirlwind of emotions I was experiencing.

Tip #4: Build a Support System

Don’t hesitate to lean on your community for support. Many new moms feel isolated and abandoned during postpartum, but it doesn’t have to be that way. If you have friends or family who want to help, let them!

Consider creating a list of specific tasks you need assistance with, whether it’s meal prep, cleaning, or simply having someone to talk to.

Meal trains are a fantastic way to ensure you have nourishing food during those early days. I also had a postpartum doula who provided invaluable support, and I can’t stress enough how much that helped me.

If you’re putting together a meal train for another new mom in your life, use The Winter Table Cookbook – each recipe is designed to have the essential nutrients us mamas need to thrive!

Tip #5: Set Manageable Goals

If you’re someone who struggles with resting, try setting small, manageable goals for yourself. This could be as simple as drinking enough water, taking your supplements, or getting outside for some fresh air.

I found that having a checklist helped me feel more in control during those chaotic early days. It’s easy to forget to take care of yourself when you’re focused on your newborn, so having a list can serve as a gentle reminder to prioritize your well-being.

Tip #6: Carve Out “Me Time”

Finding time for yourself is crucial, even if it feels challenging. Whether it’s taking a warm bath, reading a book, or simply enjoying a quiet moment, carving out “me time” can help recharge your batteries.

I loved taking Epsom salt baths with herbal sitz bath bags, which provided a soothing experience. Even if it’s just for a few minutes, those moments of self-care can make a world of difference.

Tip #7: Invest in Comfort

Let’s talk about comfort. I highly recommend investing in cute and comfortable pajamas and loungewear. You’ll be spending a lot of time in them, so why not make it enjoyable? I found that having soft, breathable fabrics made my postpartum experience feel a little more special.

Personally, I lived in these pajamas and this robe after giving birth to both of my sons!

Additionally, consider setting up a postpartum sanctuary in your home. This could be a cozy corner with all your essentials—snacks, water, and anything else you might need—so you don’t have to leave your space too often.
