069: How To Stay Nourished as a Mom, Before and After Baby

Pregnancy, postpartum, and motherhood—they’re some of the most transformative seasons of life, and they can also be some of the most challenging when it comes to nourishing ourselves. Between growing a baby, healing postpartum, and chasing little ones around, it can feel impossible to prioritize our own health and nutrition.

But here’s the truth: taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it’s essential. In order for us women to take care of our families, we need to nourish ourselves first… and I’m not just talking about food. You need to nourish your body, yes–but you also need to take care of your nervous system, nourish your sense of community, and fill your own cup.

When we hear the word nourishment, women typically think of food, but I believe there are multiple different types of nourishment for mothers, including nourishing your nervous system and your community. So, I ask you this: have you nourished your mind, body, and spirit today?

In this episode, I’m sharing how I approach nourishment in these seasons of life, from the foods that fuel me during pregnancy to the simple meals that keep me going as a mom.

And if you’re looking for inspiration in your own kitchen, my new cookbook, The Winter Table Cookbook, is packed with recipes that are not only nourishing but also practical for busy moms. From bone broth-based soups to protein-packed breakfasts, it’s the ultimate guide to feeling good this winter. Grab your copy of The Winter Table Cookbook here!

The Importance of Nourishment

A well-nourished woman has more energy, patience, and a stabilized nervous system. This not only benefits her but also positively impacts her relationships with her spouse and children.

I often find myself returning to the basics of self-care, especially during overwhelming times, whether it’s due to the news, daily parenting challenges, or simply trying to find time for myself.

If you’re listening to this podcast, you might have a lot on your plate—perhaps a demanding job, school runs, or other responsibilities. I want to remind you that it’s essential to carve out time for yourself, even if it’s just on the weekends. Whether it’s trying a new Pilates class or taking a walk with your kids, small acts of self-care can make a significant difference!

Nourishing More Than Just Your Body

When we think of nourishment, we often focus on food. However, it’s crucial to recognize that nourishment also includes taking care of your nervous system.

This week, I found myself feeling ungrounded and having trouble sleeping. I realized that my phone usage before bed was contributing to my unrest. By identifying what was affecting my well-being, I was able to regain my sense of balance.

Nourishment can come from various aspects of your life, including your daily habits, community, and boundaries around technology. For instance, I’ve made it a point to get outside for a walk every day, even in the winter. This simple act has been incredibly beneficial for my mental health.

Practical Tips for Nourishing Yourself

As a busy mom, I often get asked how I nourish myself and my family. The first step is to focus on the food I eat. Prioritizing protein is essential for muscle growth and overall health. Aim for about 30 grams of protein per meal, and consider tracking your macros to ensure you’re meeting your nutritional needs.

For me, breakfast is a non-negotiable. I typically start my day with eggs, fruit, and a protein-rich drink, like matcha or a latte made with raw milk. I also make sure to prepare dinner early in the day to avoid the chaos that can come with hungry kids in the evening.

In addition to protein, I focus on incorporating trace minerals into my diet. Shellfish, coconut water, and mineral-rich teas are some of my go-to sources. These foods not only support my energy levels but also contribute to my overall well-being.

The Power of Movement

Walking is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to nourish your body and mind. I aim for 10,000 steps a day, and I’ve found that even a short walk can reset my mood and energy levels.

Studies show that regular walking can improve cardiovascular health, aid in weight management, and boost the immune system.

In our household, when tensions rise, a family walk can be a game-changer. It’s a way to reconnect and reset, especially after a challenging day.

Emotional Nourishment

As mothers, we often sacrifice our emotional well-being for our families. It’s essential to check in with ourselves and recognize when we need support. I’ve found that social media can be a double-edged sword; while it can connect us, it can also overwhelm us.

Setting boundaries around screen time has been crucial for my family’s emotional health. Tune in to Episode 67: Less Screen Time, More Magic: A Parenting Experiment That Changed Everything where I share all about this topic!

I also encourage you to explore practices like breathwork, journaling, and acupuncture. These modalities have helped me manage stress and maintain emotional balance.

Building a Supportive Community

One of the most significant aspects of motherhood is the need for community. I’ve heard from many mothers who feel isolated during their postpartum journey, and I want to emphasize that you don’t have to go through this alone.

Finding a supportive community, whether through friends, family, or a church, can make a world of difference. My husband and I recently reconnected with our faith and joined a church community. It has been incredibly uplifting to surround ourselves with other parents who understand the challenges we face.
